Marketo nurture streams need an attribution contract
Choose engagement streams or nested email programs by cadence, eligibility, and reporting; test acquisition separately.
November 5, 2026
A Marketo team has twelve emails shared across three audiences, each with a different cadence. The design debate is one Engagement Program with streams versus several nested Email Programs. The real decision reaches beyond send timing: the team also needs to know what moves a person between streams, whether a message is skipped after prior receipt, and which program gets credit in reporting.
Decide what varies by audience
Map each audience's entry condition, cadence, transition trigger, exit condition, and content eligibility. If the same nurture continues over time and stream transitions represent lifecycle movement, an Engagement Program gives a visible cadence and stream model. Adobe says transition rules are configured on the destination stream and pull people into it. Test paused members too. If each touch needs separate assets, conditional sending, or multi-touch attribution, Adobe documents nested programs within a stream. The choice can be hybrid; it need not be an all-or-nothing hierarchy.
Prove the no-repeat behavior
Adobe's nested-program guidance says membership and program ID affect whether a person receives a stream email. Build three test records: a new person, someone transitioning after several touches, and someone who received the same email in an earlier stream. Record which message each gets at the next cast. A stream move is not a license to resend all prior content. Also test exhaustion and pause/unpause against the intended cadence.
Keep acquisition distinct from nurture
Adobe defines Acquisition Program as the program responsible for acquiring a person, a first-touch concept. Do not infer that changing streams should rewrite it. Record acquisition, engagement-program membership, nested-program membership, and success status as separate fields in the reporting test. Compare the expected first-touch and multi-touch reports before choosing the final structure. Ask the implementation team for a sample report showing how one person appears before and after a transition.
Adovo’s view
The cleanest nurture is the one whose membership and credit can be explained from a single customer timeline. A convenient canvas is secondary. If the business cannot say why a person received a touch or why a program got credit, the structure is still unfinished.
