A dbt microbatch rebuild fails before it can repair history

A reported dbt v2 parser error can block a microbatch full refresh. Protect the recovery path before changing a production model.

October 26, 2026

A microbatch model can run incrementally for weeks, then fail when a full rebuild is needed. An open dbt issue reports a begin parsing error, 'str' object has no attribute 'year', during a full refresh through the v2 parser on Snowflake. The reporter says the same model worked in dbt 1.x. That is a version-specific report, not proof that every microbatch model has this defect.

Identify the failing boundary

Capture the dbt distribution, parser or engine path, adapter version, model config and exact command. Compare a normal incremental run with the full-refresh run in a non-production target. The reported example uses incremental_strategy='microbatch', an event_time field, a string begin date and the v2 parser. An error before model execution points to configuration parsing rather than corrupted historical rows.

Protect the rebuild path

dbt's incremental model guide explains that --full-refresh rebuilds the target table and can also affect downstream incremental models when selected with descendants. Before retrying, save the current relation or use an isolated schema, quantify the backfill range and expected row counts, and schedule compute capacity. Do not repeatedly run a destructive rebuild against the only trusted copy while the parser error is unresolved.

Choose a controlled workaround

Test a known-good engine or version in a disposable target, or wait for an upstream fix and verify it with the same model. Avoid silently changing the begin value just to make the error disappear; that could narrow the history being rebuilt. Compare output row counts, time ranges and downstream aggregates before promoting the new relation.

Adovo’s view

The real reliability test is whether a team can rebuild history on demand. An incremental model without a proven recovery path is merely working until the first repair is needed.

dbt build is green while source data is stale: put freshness before the model

Passing transformations do not prove new source data arrived. Add an explicit freshness decision and a named owner for the ingestion-to-dbt handoff.

dbt incremental model misses lookup changes: rebuild the affected keys
